Bell & History Day

Saturday, April 11th is Bell & History Day, marking the official opening of Frederick County's museum season. Across the country, more than 20 participating museums and historic sites offer complimentary entry along with special programs. Enjoy period demonstrations, living history vignettes, hands-on crafts, refreshments, tours, music, and various bell-themed activities from 10 am - 4 pm.

During Bell & History Day, the Passport to Hisotry Program encourages event-goers to collect passport stamps at each location visited. Participants receive a souvenir bell and a chance to win a grand prize. Passports are available at the Frederick Visitor Center at 151 S East Street in Frederick.

Bell & History Day will kick off with the ringing of the Frederick County History Bell at the Frederick Visitor Center. Everyone present is invited to ring the bell, starting at 10 am. Afterwards, stay to see the exhibits and the visitor orientation film.

At 7pm the day concludes with the Bell & History Handbell Festival at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Hundreds of bells and chimes will perform with the theme "Gladness of Heart" recalling President Abraham Lincoln's last public address of which his opening statement was, "We meet this evening, not in sorrow, but in gladness of heart." The concert falls on the same day as Lincoln's address, 150 years ago. There is no charge, no reservations are necessary, and the public is invited. The concert will last approximatele one hour.

In the lieu of the tradition, collective Bell & History Day bell ringing throughout Frederick, bells throughout Frederick County will ring on April 9 at 3:15pm as part of Bells Across the Land: A Nation Remembers Appomattox. THe National Parks Service has invited partners across the country to ring bells for four minutes - one minute for each year of the war - to commemorate Confederate General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Bells will ring throughout the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area - at churches, fire halls, and public buildings.

Bell and History Day is hosted by the Frederick Historic Sites Consortium with support from Plamondon Hospitality Partners. Detailed program information, participating sites, and activities can be found on the Bell & History page.

Ovarian Cancer Walk

This year the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) Frederick Chapter will be hosting their 2nd annual 5K Walk to Break The Silence on Ovarian Cancer in Baker Park, 121 Bentz Street Frederick, MD. on June 20, 2015 at 9am. Our walk is sponsored by Cancer Care & Infusion Center of Frederick and Mt. Airy, Frederick Regional Health System and Maryland Title Center. It is inspiring and energizing day for ours survivors and a day to remember and pay tribute to those we have lost to the disease. Last year, we expected 150 participants and to raise $20,000. We were amazed by the immense community support as we had over 530 walkers and raised $75,000 for awareness and research for a cure.

Ovarian cancer is referred to as the "silent killer" as it has vague signs and symptoms and it's usually diagnosed at a late stage when prognosis is poor. Frightening but true - this year, 21,980 women will recieve a new ovarian cancer diagnosis. According to the American Cancer Society, when ovarian cancer is found early at a localized stage, the survival rate of patients who live longer than 5 years is 90%. Did you know that the Pap test does not detect Ovarian Cancer? Many women don't know this and currently there is no test to detect ovarian cancer. Some of the signs of ovarian cancer include bloating, eating and feeling full quickly, abdominal pain and trouble with urination. If these symptoms persist consistently for 2 or more weeks, you should see your gynecologist.

We walk to raise funds but mainly we walk to raise awareness of this deadly disease. Breast cancer advocates have done a wonderful job of awareness and we are hoping to make the Teal ribbon and what it stands for better known to all women. To learn more about the event, to donate or register, please go to nocc.kintera.ord/frederickmd
