SUMMARY:The Cindy Alvarado On the Road Again Run/Walk
DESCRIPTION:New Market Elementary School is honored to be hosting “The Cindy Alvarado On the Road Again Run/Walk” on Saturday\, May 13\, 2023. We are proud to officially honor Cindy Alvarado with this annual New Market tradition. Ten years ago\, Cindy Alvarado worked diligently to plan and implement the first New Market Elementary School On the Road Again 5K. This became a tradition and an event that our community is incredibly proud to support. In February of 2016\, our community lost Cindy to an incredibly brave battle with lung cancer. It is with love and pride that we have added her name to this wonderful community event! New Market Elementary will use our proceeds to provide instructional materials for our classrooms! This is a precedent that was started by Cindy Alvarado: raising funds for the school community that she loved so dearly.

SUMMARY:Remembering Their Lives - Frederick County Lynching Victims
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Frederick Remembrance Memorial Coalition\, a part of the Maryland Lynching Memorial Project on Saturday\, May 13\, 2023 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at South End Park Pavilion\, Frederick\, MD as we gather together to commemorate the lynching victims in Frederick County. “There were at least 6\,500 lynchings in the United States between 1865 and 1950\, and of that number\, at least 38 were in Maryland.” In Frederick County\, three documented lynchings took place\, and the victims were James Carroll (1879)\, John Biggus (1887)\, and James Bowens (1895). \nThis event will center around remembering the lives of these men by sharing their stories and collecting soil from locations near where the victims were lynched. The soil will be placed in jars provided by the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) as part of their Community Soil Collection Project. One jar will be sent to the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) in Alabama\, a second will be preserved by African American Resources Cultural and Heritage Society (AARCH) in Frederick\, and a third jar will be sent to Baltimore\, MD. Our keynote speaker is Dr. Terry Scott\, Director of the Institute for Common Power\, past Chair of the Hood College History Department\, and author of “Lynching and Leisure: Race and the Transformation of Mob Violence in Texas.” \nIf you plan to attend\, please register through our Eventbrite link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/remembering-their-lives-frederick-county-lynching-victims-tickets-616152808637. This will help us to have an estimated number of community members attending the event and to add you to the email list for future Frederick Remembrance Memorial events.

SUMMARY:Global 6K for Water
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Global 6K for Water\nDate: May 20\, 2023 at 9 am (arrive at 8:30)\nLocation: Paramount Elementary School\n19410 Longmeadow Rd\, Hagerstown\, MD\nRegistration or donation link: https://tinyurl.com/23pe6cnx\nQuestions: Contact Amy or Jeff 240-625-8722 or 301-991-2851 \nYou can walk or run! Bring a stroller\, push a wheelchair\, walk your dog\, take a walk with a friend or run for fun for a great cause! \nWhy Water?\nNearly 1\,000 children under age 5\, in underdeveloped countries\, die every day from diarrhea caused by contaminated water\, poor sanitation\, and improper hygiene. But we believe the global water and sanitation crisis can be solved within our lifetime. \nWhy is this event a 6K instead of a 5K?\nSix kilometers (or 3.7 miles) is the average round trip distance a person in the developing world must walk to find water that is often unsafe to drink. By participating in this event\, you are walking/running that distance so they won’t have to. \nHow much does it cost to participate?\nThrough World Vision’s water projects\, every $50 provides life-changing clean water to one person. So your adult registration fee of $50 provides clean water to one person for life! Youth (18 and under) registration is $25. Each child registration will be matched by donors so their registration still provides life-changing clean water. Once you register on-line\, you will be mailed a T-shirt\, medal and bib. Your bib will have the photo\, name\, age\, and country of the child you will be walking or running for. Every participant will have a different bib. Show up to Paramount Elementary on “race” day in your orange shirt and bib to move your feet 6K so the child on your bib never has to again. The more people you bring with you\, the more fun it is! If you can walk for 60-75 minutes\, you CAN do this! Other ways to support providing clean water is to pray for participants and future clean water recipients or to click on the above link and click on “support us”.
